Hydrotherapy
Hydrotherapy uses the buoyancy, warmth and resistance of water to make movement easier, especially when joints, fractures or chronic pain make land-based exercise hard. Our class runs at the Bribie Island Aquatic Centre on Thursdays at 1:15 pm, led by one of our physios with every exercise modified to suit you on the day.
Who we help
Conditions and concerns we treat.
Common reasons people start
- Knee or hip osteoarthritis
- Post-operative rehab (joint replacement, ACL, spinal)
- Chronic low back pain
- Fibromyalgia and persistent pain
- Hypermobility and joint instability
- Reduced weight-bearing tolerance
- Falls confidence and balance work
Why water works
- Buoyancy reduces joint load by up to 80%
- Warmth helps muscles relax and pain settle
- Water resistance builds strength gently
- Less balance demand means lower fall risk
- Movements that hurt on land often don't in the pool
Where the class runs
- Bribie Island Aquatic Centre, undercover heated pool
- Thursdays at 1:15 pm
- Runs year-round, including through winter
- Physio-led, every session
- Class places are capped, easiest to book a 1:1 first

What to expect
Your first appointment.
Land-based physio assessment first
Before joining the pool class, we book you in for a land-based assessment with one of our physios. They take a full history, screen any joints, and confirm hydrotherapy is the right fit for your goals.
Class with a physio in the pool
You join the Thursday 1:15 pm class at Bribie Island Aquatic Centre. One of our physios runs the session in the pool, and modifies each exercise to suit you, your body and the work you're managing. Everyone in the class is doing different versions of the same exercises.
Reviewed as you progress
Your physio updates your modifications in real time as you get stronger or work through the next phase of your rehab. You don't need to bring anything but yourself and your bathers.

FAQs
Common questions.
Where is the pool?
+
We run hydrotherapy at the Bribie Island Aquatic Centre. The hydrotherapy pool is undercover and heated, so the class runs year-round, including through winter. Visit the aquatic centre's website at bribieislandaquatic.com.au for directions, parking and facility info.
Do I need to be a strong swimmer?
+
No. Hydrotherapy is done in waist- to chest-deep water with your feet on the bottom. You don't need to swim, and the class is built so non-swimmers are entirely comfortable.
Is there a pool entry fee on top of the class price?
+
Yes. The class price covers the physio-led session only; you pay the standard Bribie Island Aquatic Centre entry fee directly to them. DVA patients are the exception, the pool entry is waived under their DVA cover.
Can I claim through my health fund?
+
Yes. Hydrotherapy classes are physio-led and claimable as group physiotherapy (item code 560) under most extras policies. We'll process HICAPS for the class fee; the pool entry fee isn't claimable.
Is hydrotherapy claimable on a GP CCMP plan?
+
GP CCMP plans (formerly TCA, EPC, or commonly known as Medicare referrals) only cover 1:1 physio sessions. They don't cover group hydrotherapy classes. If you'd prefer a 1:1 hydrotherapy session, that can be billed under your GP CCMP, give us a call to organise it.
What should I bring?
+
Bathers you can move in, a towel, drink bottle and thongs or sandals for the pool deck. We'll give you everything else you need.
